Installation and Setup

Auto update for Joomla is extremely simple to install and configure.


For most extensions and most users, the procedure will be:

  1. Download the extension to your local machine as a zip file package.
  2. From the backend of your Joomla site (administration) select Extensions    Manage.
  3. Click on the "Upload Package File" tab.
  4. Click the Browse button and select the extension package on your local machine.
  5. Click the Upload File & Install button.
  6. Some extensions may provide further instructions on installation.
  7. Note that modules and plugins must be enabled before they will work.


To configure Auto Update for Joomla there are only a few steps for you to take.

  1. Go to Extensions Auto update for Joomla
  2. Once in the main page you will click on the Options button in the upper right of your toolbar.
  3. Enter the email address that you would like to receive notifications when an automatic update has been completed.
  4. Save and close

Cron Task Setup

  1. Set up a cron task within your hosting control panel that will automatically ping the provided update URL shown on the Auto Update screen.

Most hosting companies have their own documentation on how to set up a cron task within your hosting panel dashboard. They will have different instructions based on the control panel that the host uses.

We highly recommend using a cron service such as http://webcron.org if you do not know how to set up cron tasks on your server. You can also check your hosting company's instructions on how to set up cron tasks.
